This creates a palpable perceptual tension: between lyricism and specificity\, abstraction and materiality\, the banal and the rarefied.\n\n\nThe idea of photography here is not as description\, but as invocation; not as affirmation\, but as contemplation. The title (“Lacunae”) hints at something that has passed\, that we may have missed\, that is now somewhere else. The term ‘lacuna\,’ from the Latin for gap or void\, directly informs this investigation into hidden narratives\, displaced histories\, and the liminal spaces where the real and imaginary meet.\n\n\nManuel Schmettau was born in Bremen\, Germany. His family moved to Minneapolis\, Minnesota when he was a young child. His father was an established classical musician; the Schmettau family followed his career as a musician and teacher to Los Alamos\, New Mexico\, Brevard Music Center\, Brevard\, North Carolina\, and eventually to Spartanburg\, South Carolina. Manuel received a BFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania State University and a MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He lived and worked in New York City for thirty five years as an artist and curator before returning to South Carolina in 2014.\n\n\n \n\n Exhibition Open: Jan 22 – Feb 28\, 2026.\n Reception: Jan 28\, 2026 | 5-7 p.m.\n\n  URL:/event/manuel-schmettau-exhibit/ LOCATION:Elizabeth Stone Harper Gallery\, 360 5th Ave\, Clinton\, SC\, 29325 CATEGORIES:Campus,Community,Students ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Harper-Gallery-Exhibit-Manuel-Schmettau-Exhibit-Ft.-Event-Image.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=UTC:20260212T190000 DTEND;TZID=UTC:20260212T190000 DTSTAMP:20260415T195501 CREATED:20251001T131114Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260108T195125Z UID:11670-1770922800-1770922800@www.presby.edu SUMMARY:㽶 Lecture Series: Vance Lecture - Matt Navarro '99 DESCRIPTION:High-profile leaders in the business world speak about how to run a successful business that maintains a moral code in which employees can take pride and use as a guide for day-to-day activities.
